The Prevention Council: Saratoga County Youth Court

High School students receive intensive training about restorative justice and the various roles of the court system. Trained students take on role as judge, court clerk, defense counsel, prosecuting counsel, and juror conducting sentencing hearings for 1st time, non-felony, nonviolent youthful offenders referred from family courts, town justice and city criminal courts and probation. All offenders are sentenced to some combination of community service, educational programming, non-financial restitution (e.g., letters of apology) and jury duty. Middle school students may participate in the program as jurors.
