American Cancer Society

“Relay for Life” is a community-run team event to fight cancer. Relays are held in Saratoga Springs and in Southern Saratoga County. Youth are welcome to set up teams of people (generally 8 to 15 per team) and fund-raise/participate in the Relays in June. Youth teams (those under the age of 18) do require a chaperone (must be 25 or older) to stay overnight at the walkathon. Youth are welcomed and, in fact encouraged, to join the planning committees of both events, planning for which generally starts in September of the prior year. Activities include event marketing, setup and kickoff events, participating in a poster run, stuffing envelopes and loading vans. For those 18 and older, there are two additional volunteer opportunities: “Road to Recovery” – driving people to & from cancer treatments (must be insured and have a valid driver’s license in good standing); and “Patient Navigation” – volunteers are needed at the ACS office in Latham to assist with speaking with patients to help meet their needs through providing information about community resources.
