May 2013-Alopecia Areata Foundation walkathon at SPAC

This very successful event organized by 14-year-old Clara Urbahn raised over $7,500.00 for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune disorder that makes one lose their body hair. The monies raised from the fundraiser went to the National Alopecia Areata research program.

Deirdre Howard wrote this grant with the help of the Teen Board of the Giving Circle to help youth build a foundation of fundraisers over the year to both send youth to northern Uganda to help build the Kagoma Gate School. Saratoga County Children’s Committee

The Children’s Committee is a non-profit organization that helps meet emergency and basic needs of underprivileged kids in Saratoga County. The largest undertaking is the Empty Stocking Project. This project provides holiday gifts and necessities to about 1,000 children each year. Volunteers can help by sponsoring a child and by granting their holiday wishes.

Saratoga Bridges (Formally Saratoga County ARC)

There are limited opportunities for student volunteers age 16 years or older. Student volunteers can assist with children’s tours, some adult tours, special events and light office work. All volunteers are expected to be on time and professional. Training is provided.

New York State Military Museum

Volunteers, ages 14 and older, interested in military history to be docents who will act as tour guides and interpreters of the museum’s exhibits. Docents serve 3-hour shifts two or three times per month.
